Welcome to Creating Realities

Welcome to the English C level Special Project for the Spring term 2003 which is centered around the theme of 'Creating Realities'. Unlike previous years we have not worked completely as a team but instead each of  the three participants have persued our their own interests using the theme as a starting point.

Despite this we have shared many common ideas among the seemingly divergent subject areas. The concept of Frontier emerged in both Jim's and Leif's work and Time as a trope was common to all of our projects. Our views concerning what 'Reality' can be have all changed during the many weeks spent on the project. The idea that there is no single 'Reality' is clear when one considers the physical pressence capable of being established in a virtual enviroment such as Active Worlds. Furthermore how a single feature of what is considered consensus reality, such as the frontier or Stonehenge can be interpreted in such dramitacally different ways. The frontiers of Cyberspace were never dreamed of by Mark Twain,  although Leif believes Twain would have loved it, and Stonehenge as the scene of present day pagan worship may have sent King James I into a fury.Time as the subject of so much metaphor and as such a difficult subject to place under any single definition brings 'Reality' into equally as many facets of meaning and interpretation.

We believe we have created a reality/ies. It is is an attempt to give form to the ideas and concepts encounted during a very busy few weeks where the learning curve was steep, the time was shared but scarce, where "different frontiers represent different kinds of realities".
